Debt Talks Show Breakdown in Governing

The article is an opinion piece by Dan Balz, but he's fair to each party in the column. He doesn't blame either the Democrats or the Republicans for the breakdown in talks, but points out their inabilities to compromise. He points out that the Republicans won't compromise on taxes, and the Democrats won't make cuts to Medicare and Social Security. The only place he really shows his personal opinions is when he says :
"Americans voted for, or got, divided government because the public doesn’t fully trust either party with the reins of power. That means the only way out of this problem is through compromise, or what one administration official called “bipartisanship by necessity,” not by choice. "

I agree that both parties need to compromise: neither party can get everything they want. It's disturbing to see that our economy could fall apart, because so many politicians are busy posturing. This country has a lot of challenges, and if Congress can't agree on a solution to a huge crisis that's looming, and listen to public opinion, than they clearly can't solve any of the other problems we're facing. To govern you can't be "rigid in your beliefs", you have to make sacrifices.
