5. McCarthy's novel is a stark contrast to Kerouac's in terms of language. While Kerouac is lyrical, loud, and colorful, McCarthy's style is dark and sparse. How does McCarthy's style lend to the story itself? Cite text for support. Who is his audience? How can you tell?
I agree that McCarthy's style is dark and sparse. The first sentence is waking up in the dark. "When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him." To me the setting was dull and grey. Everything was about being lifeless and ashes everywhere and the water being grey.
McCarthy's style lend to the story itself because the books is about struggling to survive and very depressing. So the whole being grey and ashes just makes it even more deeper.
The audience is anyone , I dont think it really has any restriction .
