In On The Road, women are barely mentioned. The mother and wife of the young boy and man in this book is actually the only woman in the whole book. She commits suicide before the man and his son go on the journey to the south. In the book, the women seems as if she couldn't have handled trying to survive. All she thought about was killing herself in order to be free from this horrible world. The book makes her seem weak in a way because she killed herself and left her family to fend for themselves. Though I wonder if she ever considered the way her son would feel knowing that his mother is gone forever. The woman was never given a name in the book just like the man and the boy. This could also show the insignificance of her as a character in the book. The omission of women in The Road to me is saying that it would be very difficult for a woman to endure this type of survival.
