This is just another upsetting example of the repercussions of gender inequality. This article addresses the completely imbalanced ratio of men to women across Iraq. It explains that, beginning with the war in Iran in the 80's, the (almost) back-to-back wars have widowed more and more women, and the numbers are horrendous. Many of the women are desperate to find new husbands, as they are often forced to rely on a man to raise a family; or, as in many cases, provide a future for the children they already have. The article mentions an American aid program which helps widows form their own small businesses, providing them with a sustainable source of income. It seems to me that this would be the most desirable form of help for widows; but, as suggested in the article, most of them just want to remarry.
