Relationships levels with the characters.

During the novel, Sal feels many different emotions--which is caused by his 'reality'. Kerouac's knowledge on love seems to have various phases. For the most part, he noticed that he is drifting apart from his close friends. In other words, he laments not being able to be a part of their lives. Yet, the love he seeks makes such permanence. This is the case that Sal and Dean continually share, despite of their rocky relationship. That being said, Sal in the 'love department' slowly expands, as he matures on knowing different females. His overall objective is to get married and settle down. This contributes to his overlaping emotions among others.
