America in Sal's View

Sal sees America differently at different points and places. He talks about alchoholism in America, the relationships between men and women, the Jazz music, and especially the poorness he sees. He also compares America to Mexico, saying America is the victim of modernization and war. I agree with this, America is still a young country, a child compared to the history of others, but a very prosperous, precocious child. A child without innocence, without guidance, trying to hold up its own weight and others weight as well. Not saying present times are worse than before, but more often than not I feel America is sinking rather than rising. And I see how Sal could feel the same, seeing all the poverty and the sadness. So he chose to try to live his life to the fullest, despite it all.
